Why Pet Price Index exists
A pet care price is more useful when you know where it came from, what it includes and when it was collected.
Most pet cost articles give a range with no source, no sample size and no date. We collect prices providers publish themselves and show the median alongside the sample size, the range and the collection month, so you can follow the links and judge how relevant a figure is to your own quote.
It matters because cost is now the main reason US owners skip care. In a Gallup survey for PetSmart Charities, 52% of owners said they had skipped or declined needed veterinary care in the past year, and 71% of those said cost was the reason.
Every number should come with a source.
