Dog neuter cost: 2026 survey of 249 clinic prices

The median published price for a dog neuter is $205 across 249 clinic and shelter prices collected in September 2026, ranging from $55 at a nonprofit clinic in Texas to $685 at a private clinic in Connecticut for a dog over 100 lb.

We checked 136 provider websites across all 50 states and Washington DC, and 109 of them, in 45 states and DC, published a dog neuter price. Half of the prices fall between $150 and $293. Sixty-four further published prices, from 30 providers, were open only to income-qualified or resident owners; they are listed in the sources but left out of every figure on this page. Every price below was read on the provider’s own website, with the link and the date it was read.

Neutering a male dog is the cheaper half of the pair. Our dog spay cost survey, 178 prices from 73 providers, has a median of $220, and where one clinic lists both, the neuter is typically $20 less and never more; at 33% of matched weight bands the two prices are identical. If you already have a quote, is $475 too much to spay a dog? explains how to judge it, and the same three questions apply to a neuter.

How much does a dog neuter cost at a nonprofit or shelter clinic?

Across 195 nonprofit clinic prices the median dog neuter is $200, and across 19 shelter clinic prices it is $155; the lowest general-public price in the survey is $55 at Texas Coalition for Animal Protection for a dog of 2 to 49 lb.

Prices at or under $100 make up 30 of the 249 in the survey, and they sit almost entirely in the South and the Plains. Furry Friends Refuge in Iowa lists $70 to $100 by weight, North Alabama Spay Neuter Clinic $70 to $100, Great Plains SPCA in Kansas $70 to $155, PPAW Knoxville $80 to $110, SNIP-IT in East Tennessee $80, Tulsa SPCA $90 and Nebraska Humane Society $90 to $120.

Nonprofit does not mean cheap everywhere. The nonprofit prices run from $55 to $675, and the top of that range is a nonprofit: Monmouth County SPCA in New Jersey lists $675 for its largest dogs. Kent Animal Shelter on Long Island lists $310 to $530, Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic in Connecticut $325 to $550, Animal Welfare Society in Maine $400 to $550 and Providence Animal Rescue League $450 to $475.

How much does a dog neuter cost at a private veterinary clinic?

Seven of the 92 providers that published a general-public price were private clinics, and their 35 prices have a median of $280, from $150 at Express Vet in New Mexico and Spay Neuter LV in Las Vegas to $685 at Value Pet Vet in Connecticut for a dog over 100 lb.

That is a bigger private sample than the spay survey found, because four of the seven are dedicated low-cost spay and neuter practices rather than full-service hospitals. ABQ Spay & Neuter lists $168 to $448 by weight with the exam, pain medication, e-collar and nail trim included.

Spay Neuter LV lists $150 to $255 with the pre-op exam, IV fluids and monitoring included. West Georgia Spay Neuter Clinic lists $172 to $192 with the exam, a rabies vaccination, the e-collar and five days of pain medication.

A 2026 study of 177 small-animal clinics in eight US states found that 1.91% of clinic websites published any price at all (Adams et al., Frontiers in Veterinary Science). Treat the $280 figure as what seven transparent clinics charge, not as the national private-practice rate. Value Pet Vet’s $385 for a dog under 25 lb is a base price with antibiotics, pain management and bloodwork listed on top.

How much more does a large dog cost to neuter?

In this survey the median is $175 for dogs under 20 lb, $180 for 20 to 50 lb, $203 for 50 to 80 lb and $260 for dogs over 80 lb; within a single provider the step from the smallest to the largest band is usually $30 to $135, with a median of $59, against a median step of $75 in the spay survey.

Inside one provider, weight always costs more. Humane Animal Partners in Delaware runs $165 to $300 across its bands, SNAP in Houston $170 to $340, Pet Allies in Arizona $90 to $260 and Sacramento SPCA $200 to $500. The widest steps are Monmouth County SPCA, $325 to $675, and the Spay & Neuter Center of New Jersey, $340 to $650.

Several clinics publish a base price and a per-pound rule instead of a top band. Cache Humane Society in Utah lists $124 plus $3 per pound over 65 lb, SNIP-IT adds $10 for every 10 lb over 40 lb, Arizona Humane Society adds $1 per pound over 100 lb and Heaven Can Wait in Nevada adds $20 or more for every 10 lb over 100 lb.

Others simply stop: Hawaiian Humane Society does not take dogs over 60 lb, and Express Vet asks owners of dogs over 120 lb to call.

What does the published price usually include?

Of the 249 prices, 136 state that pain medication is included, 85 the e-collar, 55 an exam, 46 a nail trim, 34 a rabies vaccination and 18 a microchip; the rest either sell those separately or do not say.

Great Plains SPCA’s $70 includes a one-year rabies vaccination and a microchip. Liberty Humane Society in New Jersey lists $250 to $280 with rabies, distemper, a microchip and a nail trim included, but charges $20 for the e-collar. Hawaiian Humane Society’s $200 includes the exam, anaesthesia, a microchip and a nail trim.

At the other end, some clinics publish the bare surgery and price everything else as a line item. Humane Society of Tampa Bay lists $110 for a dog under 50 lb, then $10 for pain medication, $20 for rabies, $8 for the e-collar and a $5 biohazard fee, which its own page adds up to $153.

Texas Coalition for Animal Protection’s $55 carries $15 for pain medication, $10 for the e-collar and $15 for antibiotics. Oklahoma Humane Society’s $99 adds $15 for extra pain medication and $15 for the e-collar.

What costs extra?

The add-on that is specific to a neuter is the cryptorchid surcharge for an undescended testicle, which 52 providers in the survey price as an extra, from $15 at Iowa Humane Alliance to $375 at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona for a dog of 100 to 150 lb; pre-surgical bloodwork for older dogs and a deposit are the other two common extras.

A cryptorchid neuter is a longer surgery, and most clinics price it by where the testicle sits. Licking County Humane Society in Ohio adds $27.50 if no abdominal approach is needed and $88 if it is. Idaho Humane Society adds $65 inguinal or $95 abdominal, Humane Fort Wayne $80 to $100, and Kent Animal Shelter $150 to $180.

Value Pet Vet prices it as a separate surgery at $375 to $500 inguinal and $575 to $725 abdominal, and Emancipet in Texas is the exception that charges its flat $125 either way.

Bloodwork is tied to age. Louisiana SPCA requires it at $75 from seven years, Humane Fort Wayne at $95 for large breeds from five years, Virginia Kincheloe at $220 from six years, and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona bundles bloodwork, an IV catheter and fluids at $150 for dogs over seven.

Some clinics set an age ceiling instead: Tulsa SPCA does not operate on dogs of six years or older, and Pet Allies takes dogs from three months to six years.

Deposits appear on 87 of the 249 listings. Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin takes a non-refundable $116.05, Virginia Kincheloe $50, IndyHumane $70 credited to the bill, and Great Plains SPCA a $20 reservation fee that is not applied to the surgery.

How does a neuter price compare with a spay at the same clinic?

Across the 138 weight bands where one provider publishes both prices, the neuter is never dearer than the spay, the typical gap is $20, and at 33% of those bands the two prices are identical; the overall medians sit $15 apart, $205 for a neuter against $220 for a spay.

The gap is widest at the private clinics and the Northeast nonprofits. Value Pet Vet lists $385 to $685 for a neuter against $475 to $1,045 for a spay, Sweetspire in South Carolina $240 to $420 against $320 to $510, and Monmouth County SPCA $325 to $675 against $405 to $700. Kent Animal Shelter’s neuter runs $310 to $530 against $350 to $560 and Nutmeg’s $325 to $550 against $350 to $575.

At the low-cost clinics the two prices often converge. Great Plains SPCA charges $70 to $155 for either surgery, and 49 of the 249 neuter prices come from pages that list one figure for a dog spay or neuter without splitting by sex. Those combined prices are included here because the page publishes them as the neuter price, and each is marked in the source list.

Why is the range so wide?

The $55 to $685 spread comes from the same three things as the spay survey: whether the provider is a subsidised nonprofit or a private practice, where it is, and how much of the aftercare is bundled into the number.

Among states with at least three published prices, the median runs from $90 in Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky to $435 in Illinois, $463 in Maine and $513 in Connecticut. New Jersey’s 13 prices have a median of $375 and New York’s six a median of $400. The state table below shows this directly; a state appears in its own row only when it has at least three prices.

The sample is weighted toward nonprofit and shelter clinics because they are the providers that publish. If your only nearby option is a private practice, expect to be quoted above the $205 median, and use the private-clinic row and the what-is-included list above to judge the quote rather than the headline figure.

How to get a comparable written estimate

Ask every clinic for the same six things in writing: the price for your dog’s weight band, whether both testicles have descended and what a cryptorchid neuter costs if not, whether bloodwork is required at his age and what it costs, whether take-home pain medication and the e-collar are included, any deposit, and whether the clinic has a weight or age limit.

Prices change without notice, and a published price is not a quote for your dog. Get a written estimate from your own vet or the clinic you choose before booking. Nothing on this page is medical advice; whether and when to neuter is a question for your veterinarian.
