Why Maine Coon prices range so widely: breeder listings compared

Maine Coon kitten prices range from $1,350 to $6,500 across 110 US catteries whose prices we read in October 2026, around a median of $3,000. Most of that spread comes from the breeder, not the region: two catteries in the same state can be more than $3,000 apart, and the dearer listings usually include more in the price.

Why Maine Coon prices vary: the short answer

  • The breeder: in North Carolina, one cattery sells pet kittens at $1,300 or $1,400 and another at $3,800 to $5,300
  • What is included: 68% of the dearest quarter of listings name a health guarantee, against 38% of the cheapest quarter
  • The kitten: 61 catteries publish a range rather than one price, and 27 of those ranges span $1,000 or more
  • The region: the median is $3,000 in three regions and $3,500 in the West, a smaller gap than inside most states

From 110 pet kitten prices published by US catteries in 35 states, read on their own websites in October 2026, one price per cattery.

Prices vary by breeder and by what the price includes. This is price research, not veterinary advice. Ask any breeder for the price, the contract and the health guarantee in writing before you pay a deposit.

How wide is the Maine Coon price range?

Half of the 110 catteries charge between $2,600 and $3,638 for a pet kitten, but the full range runs from $1,350 at Bald Mountain Maine Coons in North Carolina to $6,500 at EuroCoons near Kansas City, Missouri.

The range is wide inside single catteries too. Of the 110, 61 publish a range rather than one price. The median range spans $800, 27 span $1,000 or more and seven span $2,000 or more.

The widest is Prestigious Purr in San Diego, which lists $3,000 for a standard pet kitten and $7,000 to $10,000 for a shaded coat. For a range, our survey counts the midpoint, so that cattery counts as $6,500. The Maine Coon price survey has the full table.

Why can two breeders in one state be $3,000 apart?

Because the gap between catteries is bigger than the gap between places: in the six states with five or more catteries, the dearest charges 1.5 to 3.4 times as much as the cheapest.

North Carolina has the widest ratio. Bald Mountain Maine Coons in Mars Hill sells pet kittens at $1,300 or $1,400 by color, sex and size. Royal Maine Coons in Asheville lists $3,800 for its standard line and $5,300 for blue eyes.

The two listings differ in more than price, as the table shows. A second pair, in Texas, shows the same pattern.

Do expensive Maine Coon kittens come with more?

Usually, yes: listings in the dearest quarter name a health guarantee, a spay or neuter, a microchip and screened parents about twice as often as listings in the cheapest quarter.

The cheapest quarter is 29 catteries at $2,600 or less, with a median of $2,300. The dearest is 28 catteries at $3,638 or more, with a median of $4,250. Half of the dearest name a spay or neuter before the kitten goes home, against a quarter of the cheapest.

Vaccinations are the exception. About 55% of both groups list them, so a vaccinated kitten is not what separates a $2,300 listing from a $4,250 one. Eight of the 29 cheapest listings say nothing about what the price includes, against four of the 28 dearest.

Does what is included explain the whole price?

No: listings that name four or five of the main inclusions have a median of $3,550, against $2,950 for those that name one or none, a gap of $600 inside a range of $5,150.

The rest comes from the kitten and the cattery. In our survey, 15 of the 16 catteries that print separate prices for males and females charge more for a male, and 10 price by color or coat. The 18 catteries that mention European lines have a median of $3,375, against $3,000 for the others.

Some catteries set one price for every kitten. Warrior Kattz charges $4,750 “regardless of color or gender”, and Elm City Maine Coon Cats in Connecticut charges $2,800 for every pet kitten. Ask whether the price you are quoted is the cattery’s base price or a premium for that kitten.

Does where you buy change the price?

Less than the breeder does: the median pet kitten price is $3,000 in the Midwest, the Northeast and the South, and $3,500 in the West.

The West is overrepresented at the top. Eight of the 28 dearest listings are in Western states, against four of the 29 cheapest. But California alone runs from $2,300 at Amore Cattery in Roseville to $6,500 at Prestigious Purr, a wider gap than between any two regions.

Delivery can close some of the distance, at a price. Of the 110 catteries, 28 list delivery, a flight nanny or shipping as an extra, so add it before you compare a distant cattery with a local one.

Is a cheap Maine Coon a warning sign?

Not by itself: the cheapest listing in the survey names vaccinations, deworming and a vet check, but cheap listings say less about health screening, so ask before you pay.

Only 4 of the 29 cheapest listings say the parents are screened for HCM, a heart condition the breed can carry, against 10 of the 28 dearest. The Cornell Feline Health Center explains what the condition is.

A high price is not proof of screening either: 18 of the 28 dearest listings do not mention it. Ask every breeder the same questions, and compare the answers, not only the totals.

How do you compare two Maine Coon listings?

Put the same five items side by side for each cattery, so that you compare the same kitten, not two different offers.

  1. Is this the pet price, with a spay or neuter agreement, and is the kitten spayed or neutered before it goes home?
  2. Does the price change with sex, color, eye color or polydactyl paws?
  3. Were the parents screened for HCM, and how long is the health guarantee?
  4. Are vaccinations, a microchip and registration with CFA or TICA included?
  5. What do the deposit, delivery and sales tax add?

Every price behind these figures, with a link to each cattery’s own page, is in the Maine Coon cat price survey, and all of them can be downloaded as the Maine Coon price sheet (CSV). For another breed, see why Bengal cats are so expensive. Prices change without notice; every figure here was read in October 2026.

Prices for everything discussed here are collected and published separately, with a source behind every figure. See cat breed prices or read how the surveys are run.

Prices vary widely by region, by breeder and by what the price includes. Use these figures to know what is normal, then ask the breeder or rescue for the price and the contract in writing before paying a deposit. Nothing on this site is veterinary advice.
