A dog euthanasia quote is within the usual range when it is $146 or less for euthanasia alone, $373 or less with private cremation, or $510 or less for a visit at home. About three in four of the published prices in our October 2026 survey of 173 dog euthanasia prices are at or below those figures.
Is your quote reasonable? The short answer
- Euthanasia alone: the median is $90, and 89% of published prices are below $200
- With private cremation: the median is $300, and none of 61 published packages is above $480
- At home: the median is $455 before aftercare, from 17 in-home services
- Check first: which of the three your quote is, your dog’s weight band, and whether you can be present
From 173 counted prices published by 92 US shelters, humane societies and clinics in 40 states, read on their own pages in October 2026.
Prices vary by provider, by region and by what the fee covers. This is cost research, not veterinary advice. Ask your own vet or shelter for the total in writing, and ask what it includes.
What kind of euthanasia quote do you have?
Before you compare, work out which of three things you have been quoted to put your dog to sleep: euthanasia alone, euthanasia with cremation, or a visit at home. Each has its own range, and their middle halves do not overlap.
The median is $90 for euthanasia alone, $300 for euthanasia with private cremation and the ashes returned, and $455 for an in-home visit before any aftercare. A $300 quote is high for the first, typical for the second and low for the third.
Many quotes mix these together. The Louisiana SPCA Community Clinic in New Orleans, for example, says its euthanasia price for new clients includes a $60 communal cremation fee and an end-of-life exam. Ask for each line separately, so you compare like with like.
Where does a quote for euthanasia alone sit?
Half of published prices for euthanasia alone are under $100, three in four are at or below $146, and only 14 of 173 are above $200.
| Your quote | Share of published prices below it |
|---|---|
| $50 | 16% |
| $75 | 32% |
| $100 | 51% |
| $150 | 75% |
| $200 | 89% |
| $250 | 97% |
| $300 | 99% |
The lowest price is a $15 euthanasia request fee at Rockingham County Animal Shelter in North Carolina. The highest is $370 at Nevada Pet Hospice’s comfort center in Las Vegas, plus cremation fees. Only one counted price is above $300.
The 173 prices include 13 shelters that sell euthanasia only together with communal cremation or care of the body. For them, that combined price is the basic service, so it is the one we count.
Who quoted you matters as much as the figure. The median is $45 at municipal shelters, $100 at nonprofit humane societies and SPCAs, and $146 at the five private clinics in the survey that publish a price.
Does my dog’s weight change what is reasonable?
Yes, where the provider prices by weight: the median rises from $80 for a dog under 20 lb to $150 for a dog over 80 lb, and three in four over-80 lb prices are at or below $218.
| Weight band | Prices | Median | Three in four at or below | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 20 lb | 23 | $80 | $120 | $160 |
| 20 to 50 lb | 24 | $88 | $145 | $180 |
| 50 to 80 lb | 26 | $110 | $183 | $225 |
| Over 80 lb | 39 | $150 | $218 | $270 |
So a $200 quote for a small dog is above every published under-20 lb price in the survey, while the same $200 for a large dog sits inside the usual range. The Animal Rescue League of Berks County in Pennsylvania, for example, lists $150 for a dog under 30 lb and $250 for one over 100 lb.
Sixty-one providers charge one price at any weight, with a median of $75. If your quote has no weight band, ask whether it would change for your dog.
Is a quote that includes cremation reasonable?
Euthanasia with private cremation has a median published price of $300, half of packages fall between $230 and $373, and none of the 61 we found is above $480.
Weight moves these packages more than it moves euthanasia alone. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa lists euthanasia with private cremation at $215 for a dog under 25 lb and $465 for one over 100 lb. SPCA Serving Erie County in New York lists $250 to $445 across its bands.
At providers that list both, communal cremation adds a median of $72 to the euthanasia price, and private cremation with the ashes returned adds $165. Communal cremation means no ashes come back, so make sure your quote says which one it is.
The Animal Humane Society in Minnesota lists all three side by side: $110 for euthanasia after the dog is surrendered to it, $170 with communal cremation and $270 with private cremation. Those three prices together show the cost of each step.
Is an in-home euthanasia quote reasonable?
The median in-home price is $455, half of the 17 services we found charge between $405 and $510, and aftercare such as cremation is usually extra.
Lap of Love, a national network of in-home veterinarians, publishes a base price for each local practice: $405 in Boise, Idaho, up to $660 in Boston. Its pages say the base price includes standard travel. All Paws Care in Bozeman, Montana, lists the lowest in-home price in the survey, $250 for a dog up to 30 lb.
An in-home quote of $500 is ordinary; the same $500 for euthanasia at a shelter would be above every counted price. Ask whether travel, sedation and aftercare are in the figure, and what a visit outside working hours costs.
Why might your vet quote more than a shelter?
The median is $45 at municipal shelters and $146 at private clinics, mostly because of what the price covers: whether you can stay, whether an exam is included, and when the appointment is.
The cheapest shelter prices often come with conditions. Dane County Humane Society in Wisconsin shows the gap in one list: $75 plus tax with the owner not present, and $150 plus tax with the owner present. Twenty-eight of the 92 providers say the owner cannot stay at their counted price. If you want to stay with your dog, compare against a price that allows it.
Some shelters also ask you to surrender the dog first, and some prices are open only to county residents or income-qualified owners. We left those 31 restricted prices out of every figure above.
Timing changes the price too. SPCA Serving Erie County charges a $250 emergency intake fee when a dog arrives with no appointment; its scheduled prices, which include general cremation, run from $160 to $240 by weight. No emergency hospital price is in the sample, and only 15 private clinic prices are in the sample, so this page cannot tell you what is normal at night or at a weekend.
So, is your quote reasonable?
Your quote is in the usual range if it sits inside or below the middle half for its own kind: up to $146 for euthanasia alone, up to $373 with private cremation, or up to $510 at home. Above that, a second quote is worth one phone call.
Ask any second provider the same five things, so the totals you compare cover the same service:
- Is sedation included, or charged separately?
- Can I be present, and does that change the price?
- Which weight band is my dog in?
- Is cremation included, and is it communal or private, with the ashes returned?
- Is there an exam, visit, travel or after-hours fee on top?

What this page cannot tell you
This is a page about price. It says nothing about whether or when it is time, which is a question for your own vet, who knows your dog. Published prices also change without notice; every figure here was read in October 2026 and is linked to its source on the survey page.
If you are facing this now, Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine runs a Pet Loss Support Hotline, staffed by trained veterinary student volunteers, at 607-218-7457.
